ericisgreat.com:   How Much is Inside Soda?

We can all agree that soda, by and large, is awesome. It has essential sugars and an entertaining fizz. We like soda. A lot. That being established, the following I say not as a Spurlock-style hippie, but as a raging hypocrite:

Soda is not really that great for you.

However, it's way cooler and more fun to hang out with than its tired forefather, water. I drink a lot of soda whenever available and, like a fish that grows to fit its environment, I usually finish whatever container of soda I happen to be drinking from, regardless of size. Usually I have a can (12oz) of soda with a meal, and it does the job, but lately I found myself getting those gas station cups of soda. You've seen the soda fountains cheerily glowing at the Kwik-E-Mart of your choosing, offering many varieties and a series of progressively larger cups.

The price increases rather slowly, the ulitmate result being that if you can get a 16oz cup for 99 cents and a 64oz (four times as much, in case you didn't want to divide) for $1.29, you get the biggest one; It's just so obviously a much better deal. So after a couple instances of feeling pretty sick after compulsively finishing my super-big-chug-gulp, I started to wonder how much I was drinking, really.

"It says 64oz, idiot, that's how much you're drinking."
Yeah, I understand that, but the figure means a lot more when we put it in context. Take a look:

16oz is roughly 1 can.

32oz is roughly 3 cans.

44oz is roughly 4 cans.

And if you finish a 64oz, that's more than five cans of soda!

Now let's try it with a two liter. This segment was made possible with a piece of equipment gifted to me from the California Water Resources Board. It's called a "funnel":

To start us off, here's how much of a two-liter one can is.

16oz is not too much.

32oz is about 1/3 of a two-liter.

44oz is more than half of a two-liter.

And if you finish a 64oz, that's nearly an entire two-liter bottle!

When you put it into perspective, it's pretty obvious that depending on your beverage of choice, one could be absent-mindedly going way overboard with the sugar/caffiene.

Bonus Info: 32 ounces is the size of a large sized fast food soda; 42 ounces is super/mega/king sized fast food soda.
